Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council hosts its second Park[ing] Day LA block party Friday, September 18

Park[ing] Day is a national grassroots effort to highlight the need for more open space in our cities by transforming parking spots into small parks. This year the Sustainability Committee is supporting Reclaim[ing] Harlem Place.

There will be temporary park installations across Downtown and throughout Los Angeles. Bring your lunch, grab the pooch and check out the temporary parks around the neighborhood for a day! For a full listing of events, go to www.parkingdayla.com

If you would like to get involved, please contact Sustainability Committee Public Vice-Chair, Jennifer Regan. Thank you to Pamela Tuttle who has volunteered to organize this event. Thank you to all of our community partners this year!

Park[ing] Day LA 2009 - next planning meeting this week!

Park[ing] Day LA Planning Meeting
Thursday, August 27, 2009
6:30PM - 8:30PM
Lost Souls Cafe (124 W. 4th Street)

Parking Day LA is now less then a month away and we can use your help getting ready for the big day!

We have secured the permit and support of the Gilmore Associates for use of Harlem Place but we still need to do some additional outreach to local groups regarding activities and entertainment for the day - as well as recruiting volunteers to support the event. Please join us this Thursday from 6:30pm to 8:00pm to see how you can help!

Friday, September 19, 2008 was Park[ing] Day LA and the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council and community partners hosted the first-ever downtown block party to celebrate. Winston Street became a temporary urban park with Skid Row 3-on-3 Basketball, g727 interactive cityscape, live art by Crewest, live music by Little Radio and their featured artists, a community table, and a dog park by the Pussy and Pooch and their partners. You can check out image from the event here:

We thought the event was a great first attempt at a block party and many of our neighbors involved and participants agree. Gunnar Hand (Director, Area-Wide Work-Force, Public Sector) and I (Director, Area-Wide Work-Force, Private Sector) will be issuing a final summary of the event and hope this will encourage the success of many future events to come. Thank you to all of our sponsors and participants. We look forward to more fun and community outreach over the next 22 months of our term!
