Community Greening Strategy

In December 2008, the DLANC Sustainability Committee was one of nine communities in the United States selected for the 2009 AIA SDAT Grant - a community assistance program by the American Institute of Architects. The Sustainability Committee partnered with community stakeholders to host a three-day visit by a team of experts to help Downtown Los Angeles with our goals to develop a community greening strategy and resource toolkit. Later this year, we expect a report with the recommendations as to how we can help make a more livable, affordable and efficient urban center. This is the first time the SDAT has been awarded to a grassroots organization such as DLANC - we need your help to keep the process moving forward.

What is a community greening strategy? The Sustainability Committee is developing projects, tools and partnerships to help foster a more livable, affordable and efficient neighborhood. As part of a larger city with a system of neighborhood councils, we hope to share our best practices with other LA communities to impact the environment on a more regional level. Our plan and approaches to this challenge is part of our overall strategy.

The following is a copy of the presentation made to LANCC on Saturday, January 2 by Chair Ashley Zarella Hand. If you have any questions, please email us at sustainability@dlanc.com

Please note: There is an additional case study on the Skid Row Tree Planting Pilot - this was not presented to LANCC today.

Thank you to Jim Diers and the entire SDAT for their contributions to this presentation. For more information on the SDAT members, please click here.
