The Sustainability Committee of the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council is pleased to announce that the first stage of the SDAT (Sustainable Design Assessment Team) grant starts this Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 9am.

This $15,000 national grant is from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and will fund a team of professionals to help with the development of a community greening strategy and resource toolkit. We have only had a short amount of time to get ready for this visit but the Sustainability Committee would like to invite you to participate in this exciting planning process.

Please NOTE: I am updating the itinerary frequently - please check out our website for a link to the latest version of the schedule.

You are welcome to join us for any of our community walks - as indicated on the schedule. Thank you to our community partners who are participating in the preliminary visit. We are hoping to visit all parts of the neighborhood represented by the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council. Introduce yourself to the team, hear their first impressions, and discuss your thoughts about walkability, livability, affordability, efficiency, and sustainability in your neighborhood.

We hope to see you this Thursday, September 10 - Friday, September 11 as we introduce the SDAT to Downtown Los Angeles. Thank you!

Sustainability Committee awarded the 2009 AIA SDAT Grant

A bit earlier than we anticipated but we are thrilled to announce that the Sustainability Committee application for the 2009 Sustainable Design Assessment Team (SDAT) grant has been accepted!

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) SDAT program is a community assistance program that focuses on the principles of sustainability. SDATs bring teams of volunteer professionals (such as architects, urban designers, planners, hydrologists, economists, attorneys, and others) to work with community decision-makers and stakeholders to help them develop a vision and framework for a sustainable future.

The SDAT process helps communities:
• understand their structure at various scales and contexts;
• explore interactions between ecological, sociological, economic, and physical systems;
• visualize potential futures;
• articulate the qualities of a place;
• advance the principles of sustainable communities; and
• define the role of stakeholders and players in both the public and private sectors.

The SDAT community assistance program provides communities with six components:
* Preliminary visit
* Three-day visit from a multidisciplinary team
* A report highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the community with regard to sustainability, along with the opportunities and obstacles to change
* Consultations after a three-day visit
* A conference call six months after delivery of the assessment report to review progress
* One-day follow-up visit to complete a secondary assessment, one year after the SDAT report is delivered
* A team of architects and other professionals such as planners, hydrologists, economic development specialists, and others are selected for each multidisciplinary SDAT team based on their credentials and the specific needs of each community. The team works in conjunction with local stakeholders to help shape the community’s strategy to increase sustainability. In order to provide the most objective assessment, the team members are from outside the particular communities.

For 2008, the AIA will fund $15,000 of each project and communities are expected to raise the remainder, including a $5,000 cash contribution.

This is an exciting opportunity to support the community greening strategy already in development as part of our mandate as the Sustainability Committee of the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council. Thank you to all of our supporters -- we will release more information once it is available. To check out the application, go to this SlideShare presentation. Happy New Year!

October 20 Meeting - Location confirmed

We have confirmed a location for our meetings:

Arda's Cafe (http://www.ardascafe.com/)
418 W 6th StreetLos Angeles CA, 90014

The cafe closes at 5:00pm but we'll be there to let you in. It is easily accessible from the Pershing Squre Red Line stop and other public transit. Click here for a map.

An agenda will be available by October 13. See you then!

First Meeting Announced - Location To Be Determined

Our first meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 20 at 6:30pm. We plan on meeting the Third Monday of the month thereafter. We hope you will be able to attend.

We are still looking for a location for this meeting so please let me know if you have any ideas. In order to comply with the Brown Act, we must be in a place that does not require identification to enter and is accessible to the general public. However, if you are not sure if your suggestion meets these requirements, I encourage you to still let me know and I will help make that determination.

Our first meeting will cover the mission statement of the committee and outline a general scope of work for the next few months. I am also hoping to invite someone from the Department of Public Works to discuss recycling programs downtown. A formal agenda will be issued by October 13.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you on Monday, October 20!
